5/6/18 – Backlash Review

Backlash came from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. You can see what my predictions for the event were here. I predicted 8 of 9 matches correctly.

Ruby Riott def Bayley
Not going to lie, I didn’t watch this match. I planned to go back and watch it after Backlash. But after how horrible the show was, (more on that later) I had no desire to do that. Ruby winning continues the momentum WWE is seemingly willing to give her.

Seth Rollins def The Miz to retain the Intercontinental Championship
WHAT DID I SAY?! Show. Stealer. Incredible way to start the show. These guys know how to work and they delivered one hell of a match. I’ll say it again, this is the best Seth Rollins we have ever seen. Better than Authority and Universal Champ Seth, this man is on another level. The Intercontinental Championship is relevant as ever, folks.

Nia Jax def Alexa Bliss to retain the Raw Women’s Championship
I’ll give some credit, this match was a tad better than I was expecting, but that doesn’t mean it was good. Nia tossing around Alexa like a rag doll is how Nia should be in the ring. She should use that power to her advantage. She should also be heel, but that’s besides the point. Did her post match speech about bullying empower you? Fine message, but such a terribly and obviously scripted promo.

Jeff Hardy def Randy Orton to retain the United States Championship
Dominos came during this match so didn’t see a ton of it. Don’t feel like I missed much. The right guy won, the right guy lost. The US Championship isn’t very relevant. Don’t really know what else to say.

Elias tries to sing, keeps getting interrupted
This promo wasn’t bad until the very end. You got fan favorites out there like New Day, Rusev, No Way Jose. Speaking of which, how ignorant can WWE creative be to not see how obviously over Rusev is? It seriously pains me. How do they not take advantage of that? Ignorance and absolute idiocy. Speaking of dumb things, face Bobby Roode. Bobby Roode and Elias feuding gives me no anticipation. I refuse to get behind Bobby Roode anymore unless he’s turned heel. Then he goes dancing like a damn fool. Great look, WWE.

Daniel Bryan def Big Cass
This match supported my point of Big Cass not being ready for this spotlight. He plays a good heel, he’s very visibly full of himself. He’s not that good in the ring. He’s certainly not good enough to try to hang with Daniel Bryan. The match didn’t last that long and it shouldn’t have. This feud will continue, but D-Bry is far more superior.

Carmella def Charlotte to retain the Smackdown Women’s Championship
I would’ve rather gone outside and watched grass grow than watch this match. Holy hell what an excruciating experience. Long, boring, too much emphasis on Carmella’s trash talk. I’m not going to be on this one very long. I don’t know what’s next and don’t care right now.

AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura ends in a double count out
….I….I just….WHAT THE HELL WAS THIS?! When you think WWE cannot get any more idiotic, THEY PROVE YOU WRONG. I mean this is just bad. There’s no working around it. This is awful. A No DQ match ends in a double count out, WWE creative has a testile fetish, and Shinsuke is still not champion. I almost would’ve rather taken a kick in the nuts than see this. WWE is running out of time on this. This was their worst match of the three. I have no answer. This match ruined my night.

Braun Strowman & Bobby Lashley def Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn
This match meant nothing to me. As I said, the last match ruined my night. The match was pointless and too long. The possible dissension between KO & Sami wasn’t interesting enough. The post-match events took too long. The only thing I took from this match was two talented guys like KO & Sami are basically jobbing to Lashley & Strowman, so that looks good on them.

Roman Reigns def Samoa Joe
Shit. The jinx in my prediction piece didn’t work. Super Roman is back in the win column and Joe took a clean loss. It’s a joke that this match was in the main event slot with virtually no build other than that of Roman-Brock. Hopefully Joe is on to do big things on Smackdown, he deserves it. As far as Roman goes, who cares? The match itself was awful.

If you had the severe misfortune of watching this show, I sincerely apologize. What a waste of time. It’s finals week and not even my finals will be worse than this show. Seth-Miz was a true spectacle and everything after was an extreme disappointment. If this doesn’t end up going down as the worst PPV of 2018, we’ve got a long year ahead.
