We found out the number one contenders for both major titles in WWE this week. While one of them is exciting, not so much for the other.
My take of the new matches announced for SummerSlam this week and how the other announced matches continued their build:
Alexa Bliss vs Ronda Rousey (Raw Women’s Championship)
Nothing of note this week (Rousey was suspended for the week). This match has potential, it would be a good time for Rousey to get the strap.
Braun Strowman vs Kevin Owens (KO gets the MITB briefcase if he wins)
This stipulation is definitely something different but something I think WWE could do a lot with. I think Braun’s momentum alone could still carry him fine without the briefcase. We’ve seen recently that KO doesn’t really have any direction right now. Finding a way to beat Braun, take the briefcase, and eventually become world champion with it is a super fun thought and, I think, would only result in the best Kevin Owens we’ve seen.
Dolph Ziggler vs Seth Rollins (Intercontinental Championship)
These two always have the potential to put on a great show but I think this feud has run its course. I understand that with the world title picture being clouded, you’ve got to have Seth do something, so I’m fine with him being here. The clear-cut favorite, to me, is to have Ziggler retain, continue picking people off, until ultimately losing it to McIntyre. Rollins had a great run with the belt but is far too talented to still be hanging around a mid-card title. Once Brock is out of the WWE equation, Rollins should fit right in with the big guys.
Carmella vs Becky Lynch (Smackdown Women’s Championship)
This big Becky Lynch push almost came completely out of nowhere but I’m all in for it. It was already foolish enough to have Carmella prevail over Asuka, but it would be LUDICROUS to have all of Becky’s momentum ruined by losing to Carmella. Carmella’s title reign has been far from inspiring and should’ve ended a long time ago. I think the candidate has finally arrived, but we’ll see what kind of story WWE wants to play with SummerSlam still three weeks away.
AJ Styles vs Samoa Joe (WWE Championship)
Speaking of good candidates to take a title belt, we have Samoa Joe. I still haven’t fully recovered from WWE dropping the ball on not giving Shinsuke the WWE title and relegating him to the United States title, but they CAN’T drop the ball here. Samoa Joe has everything it takes to be a world champion. He can work, he can talk, he walks with the cocky swagger. AJ has been a really good champion and he’s made the most of his time, but his time is up. It’s time for a new face at the top of Smackdown and I can’t think of a more deserving candidate than Samoa Joe.
Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns (Universal Championship)
I’m back, I had to run to the bathroom after typing that match headline to puke. But seriously, this is horrible, but completely expected. I listen to Wade Keller’s podcast every week and he made a really good point when it comes to this match. It feels like that event that you know is going to happen and it’s just looming over your head. Just get it over with, take the pain, and let’s move on. That’s about the best way you can put this match. We expected to see it at Mania, then the Greatest Royal Rumble, but now I can’t think of any way that it doesn’t finally happen here. Roman takes the strap, Brock goes to the UFC, and WWE will settle in mediocrity for a little bit. Who am I kidding, they already are.
With a lot of answers this week as far as what we’ll see, now it’s WWE’s job to get me excited to see them. Currently, I’m excited for AJ-Joe and I wouldn’t say I’m excited, but interested, in Braun-KO. That’s it.
Rousey’s suspension is up and Brock will be on Raw, so there’s a couple things to look forward to on Raw. How will Smackdown advance their stories? The tag title tournament will continue this week. Hopefully Cesaro and Sheamus prevail, they’re the only team left that provides something new. The ball is in WWE’s court. Make me excited for this show.
